The Two Winged Church
Although the cells are the main focus of church life, all the cell groups in the wider body of the church come together for a whole church celebration.
The cells and celebrations are the two wings of the church. Celebrations can be on a monthly or fortnightly basis, sometimes they are held weekly, but care needs to be taken that the celebration does not take over
the priority of the cell, because the cell is where lasting life change really occurs. The health of the individual cell must be maintained if the wider body is to remain healthy. Biblical teaching at these
celebrations forms the basis for subsequent cell study and discussion.
What is happening to the Church?
Across the nations, God is doing something remarkable. Many churches from many different denominations have begun to change their pattern of church
life and operate as Cell Churches. Many others have started as a Cell Church and are growing rapidly, in the:
- quality of their discipleship to Jesus,
- quality of their relationships to other believers,
- quantity of new additions to the community of faith.
- In Britain, many churches are in the process of transitioning (changing their way of operating) to become Cell Churches - while still remaining
part of their denomination. This is also true of many of the Newer, non-denominational churches.
Cell Church is a way of being, not a denomination.
Why is it called Cell Church?
As we have seen from Paul's letters, the small group or home group is the church. It is the basic Christian unit of Church life. Paul likened the
church to a body when he called the church the body of Christ.
As we know, a body is made up of many cells, which in Paul's picture speak of individual Christians. The term Cell Church simply extends this idea
by thinking of each home group as an individual cell within the wider body of Christ. So the small group, or cell group is compared with the biological cell of the human body.
