Each Cell has 6 basic functions

Represented here by the hand. (Taken from Redefining revival by Bill Beckham , page 39)

PALM – Christ.

Each of the other 5 elements flow out of the heart of God and are an extension through the cell of who God is.

In every aspect of cell life we are looking for the:

  • Presence of God
  • Power of God
  • Purpose of God

THUMB – Community.

Living in community with God and with each other.

Just as each finger operates in relationship to the thumb, so every element in cell life operates in relationship to COMMUNITY.

The words “Abiding in Christ” found in John 15 and 1 John 1 best sum up the NT meaning of COMMUNITY.

LITTLE FINGER – Equipping.

Equipping new believers for a life of holiness and reaching out to others.

The church has traditionally struggled to disciple and equip new believers and grow them into spiritual maturity. This is an area that needs to be prioritised and included in the basics of cell life.

Christ has provided for the care of his spiritual babies in spiritual families, such as small groups.

RING FINGER – Accountability.

One of the names Jesus uses for the promised Holy Spirit explains the meaning of Accountability. The Spirit is the Advocate: “The one who comes alongside” John 14:16.

When we are accountable to each other, it is us sharing in the work of the Holy Spirit, walking with each other, coming alongside each other, encouraging, supporting, being their advocate and friend.

The next basic of cell life is:

INDEX FINGER – Leadership.

The most prominent finger represents the leader of a small group, the spiritual fathers and mothers.

Fatherhood implies reproduction – so this reminds us that the aim of the cell is to reproduce itself, which must first take place at the point of leadership.

The last basic of cell life is:

FIRST FINGER – Evangelism.

The first finger represents evangelism because the cell exists to point people towards God, to direct those who are lost back to him.

Evangelism in a cell church is varied, creative and comprehensive, hence one of the basics of Cell life must be to point the way to God.
